Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

I like gi pants…even though I wore them backwards for a month and a half when I first started BJJ in ’98. After I got them turned around, I liked them even more. Since I started jiu-jitsu I have modified my gi pants. I like to train in Cholo-cuts. What? you’ve never heard of Cholo-cuts? It has to do with the length of your pants. It’s the length somewhere between regular pant-length (a little past the ankle) and knee-length shorts—mid-calf I guess. The Cholos (Mexican gangsters) in my neighborhood used to wear their Ben Davis and Dickies like that.

I was researching (surfing the net due to boredom) a couple years ago and I came across an old photo of Japanese judoka that were living and training in Hawaii. They were sporting traditional judo gis except that their pants were higher than usual, about the same length as the cholos’ from the neighborhood. I liked the look—and I hated the feeling of my gi pants around my ankles—so I chopped them off.

Cholo-cuts are not legal in competition and I guess it’s a form of cheating when you train, but I don’t care, I like them. Tap or Die will have a line of Cholo-cut gi pants in various designs and colors. They’ll be jiu-jitsu fight shorts.
