Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

It’s time to start BJJ Day! October 1st (Helio Gracie’s birthday) will be national BJJ Day. I know it’s awfully presumptuous of me to start a day, but I’ve been doing some research on days that are celebrated—days that someone, some where started—and if these days are recognized, then I’m sure there is room for a national, or even international BJJ Day.

I’m Not Going To Take It Anymore Day
National Clean Off Your Desk Day
Penguin Awareness Day
National Hugging Day
Squirrel Appreciation Day
Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day
National Compliment Day
Freethinker’s Day
Dump Your Significant Jerk Day
Wear Red Day
Darwin Day
International Skeptics Day
Ferris Wheel Day
International Scrap Booking Day
Panic Day
Genealogy Day
National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day
National Common Courtesy Day
Forgive Mom and Dad Day
National Quilting Day
International Goof-Off Day
Friendship Day
Hamburger Day
International Nagging Day
Bad Poetry Day

So, it’s official, October 1st 2009, will mark the first official BJJ Day. The next step is deciding on ways to celebrate? Here’s some suggestions:

1. wear your gi to work
2. choke out 10 random strangers, then invite them to your jiu-jitsu class
3. speak with a Portuguese accent all day
4. call in sick to work and train jiu-jitsu instead
5. pronounce your “r’s” with an “h” sound
6. take a beginning karate class and try not to laugh out loud
7. arm lock anyone wearing the color purple
8. rent or buy the movie Choke and watch it more than once
9. have complete strangers put you in a head lock and see if you can get out
10. sew up the holes in your gi or order a new one

I’m not kidding about national BJJ Day. I’m really going to celebrate it on October 1st. I’m not sure how, but I will do something to spread the word and share the art that I love.
