The Influence of Jiu-Jitsu
I was watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars cartoon with my son—I like it—I’d probably have watched it without him. I noticed something that has become more and more obvious to me the last couple of years, and that is the fight scenes in TV shows and movies are changing.
During this episode of The Clone Wars, two storm troopers are fighting each other. One slips to the other’s back and puts in a rear-naked choke (with hooks). The other guy escapes and puts on a knee bar—a knee bar! Whoever wrote this episode knows jiu-jitsu—the animator knows jiu-jitsu too because it was animated perfectly. After the fight scene I turned to my son, and my son said, “Dad, storm troopers know jiu-jitsu!”
I’ve seen it in other movies as well. I swear I saw King Kong hip toss a T-rex and then try a standing guillotine, and we can’t forget the climactic ending of Lethal Weapon when Mel Gibson finished off the bad guy with a triangle.
Jiu-Jitsu has begun to influence the media and soon it will be everywhere. It will be in movies, fashion, music—mainstream. For those of us who have been doing it for a while it’s going to bug us, but I think jiu-jitsu is for everyone, so let the revolution begin.
I actually would like to start the trend of wearing sneakers made out of gi material—that would be dope. I will call them jiu-jitshoes, and they will be the new thing in fashion. They’ll even write a rap song about them. That would be cool. I better get started on the patent.

your shoes would have to have little belts on them. You know blue, purple, etc….
That’s a great idea, but instead of belts we could use white, blue, purple, etc… laces. The wheels are officially spinning.
