I wanted to choke out a middle school principal this morning–a standing guillotine would have done the trick–of course I didn’t because of jiu-jitsu. Jiu-jitsu saved that principal’s life, because it has taught me how to be calm–how to relax in a stressful situation.
I don’t like condescending people, but when they’re disrespectful and rude then something bad is going to happen to them. That’s basically how this principal acted to a group of high school teachers which I happened to be a part of.
I can tell when I’m getting angry because my jaw starts to get tight and my shoulders start to bow. The only reason I know that is because I’ve been spending the last eleven years trying to relax in jiu-jitsu. I know exactly when I’m getting tense, or frustrated, or angry, and I know how to relax when I feel myself starting to go in one of those directions.
I breathe.
Breath is like clarity. It cleans out tension and brings in common sense—it’s an invisible sedative, a natural relaxant. Things become clear with breath. We are able to calm ourselves.
My wife would have been pissed if I choked out a principal. She would have told me that’s not how grown people act, and she would have said that I jeopardized my job, and she would have been right, but it would have felt great.
I know how to control myself and I realize that jiu-jitsu not only saved that principal, but it also saved me.

yea but it would have felt really good to do. You know it would have.
Yes. It would have been great!
