Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

Hang On

July is the month to hold on if you own a martial arts school. Attendance is low and money is lower, but the bills stay the same. August is better, but July can kill you.

According to William Feather, “Success seems to largely be a matter of hanging on after others have let go.” I like it. Sometimes in jiu-jitsu it’s a matter of being patient. Someone’s squeezing on your head for ten minutes until finally their strength runs out, or they make a mistake and you capitalize.

I guess it’s the same with anything worth being successful at, sometimes you have to let a guy squeeze your head—just hang on, he can’t hold on forever.
