Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

Do you remember when you were a kid and an adult would ask you what you wanted to be when you grew up? I remember my Aunt Berma asked me that question when I was younger.

“Markie, what do you want to be when you grow up? You can be anything you want.”

“Anything?”

“Yes, anything!”

“Hmm, I want to be either a red sports car or a gorilla.”

I remember that day very clearly. I remember my aunt looking at me like I had lost my mind. I think I was five or six years old, but I’ve always had a dreamer’s mind, so when she said “anything” I let my imagination take over. I really thought I could be anything and those were the things I wanted to be.

Today I’m happy with who I’ve become—a jiu-jitsu man, a father, a husband, an English teacher, a business man. I’m not sure I’d like to be a car or a gorilla now, but the idea of becoming anything you wanted was so magical to me that I’ve never let that memory go.

There is hope in a question like that. There is opportunity, motivation, and magic. What do you want to be? The answers are limitless.

That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while! Kids are awesome.
