Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

In jiu-jitsu, repetition is king and drilling is queen; they are both crucial to the kingdom. I try to explain to people the importance of becoming a technique perfector and not a technique collector. Technique collectors always come to class looking for something new. They learned a new technique last week and now they’re ready to move on, to “learn” as many techniques as they can. This is a mistake.

In order to make a technique really yours, you have to practice applying it, you have to repeat the movement over and over and you have to drill. Not only do you have to repeat the movement over and over again, but you have to do it correctly. If your technique is not correct and you repeat it one thousand times all you’ve done is polished poop.

Repetition and drilling are to polish your technique, but if your technique is (excuse the pun) crap then what you’re essentially doing is polishing poop.

Basically what I’m saying is that we as students should perfect the techniques that we learn by repetition and drilling, and when we drill we should make sure what we’re drilling and practicing is good sound technique, otherwise we’re wasting our time—We’re polishing poop, and poop doesn’t polish.
