Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

Fred Ettish was a frog. You remember Fred Ettish—a kenpo karate, black belt who had trained in karate for over twelve years. He’s the same guy who was absolutely annihilated in UFC 2.

Fred was a frog.

There is a story about a frog in a well. He was the biggest and baddest frog in the well—he was king. One day the frog accidentally hopped into the bucket and was pulled to the surface. The well frog was amazed at the sun, the fields, and of course the other frogs, who where much bigger and stronger than the well frog. The well frog was overwhelmed. He was no longer king—so he jumped back into the well.

I think Fred Ettish was courageous, but I don’t think he was ready for the real world. In his school he was king, but when he was brought to the surface, when he made it to reality, he was overwhelmed.

It still happens today. Fighters train in their schools without ever competing and only training with their gym mates. It’s hard to evaluate your skills when you’re living in a well. You may be the king of your school, but there are always bigger frogs.

I think Fred Ettish was brave; he just wasn’t living in the real world.
