I have no doubt that guys in jiu-jitsu are tough—really tough. I’m not convinced, however, that everyone that does jiu-jitsu is smart. Don’t get your gi in a bunch. What I mean by that is sometimes jiu-jitsu guys don’t know when to quit.
Here’s an example: Timmy and Tommy are training. Tommy gets Timmy in an armbar. Timmy doesn’t want to tap and ends up getting his elbow popped. Timmy is tough, but now he’s hurt. Instead of taking care of his elbow, Timmy wants to go again to prove to everyone he’s a tough guy. Well, guess what Timmy? Everyone knows you’re a tough guy; now show them you’re a smart guy. Show everyone you’re smart by taking care of your elbow; show everyone you’re smart by not proving you’re tough. We know.
You’ve shown us you’re tough; now show us you’re smart.
I admit it’s tough to quit; it’s tough to set your ego down and nurse your injury, but it’s the smart thing to do.
