Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

Marketing seems to be part science and part luck. I’m not scientific and I wouldn’t necessarily call myself lucky, so I think I might struggle with this marketing thing, but I’m going to learn. I want to write about this in the Tap or Die blog because this is what I’ll need to do for the Tap or Die company as soon as I do it for West Side Academy.

I met with my marketing lady yesterday (yep, I have a marketing lady and she’s good). She told me that my image (my school’s image, anyway) is all over the place, and I need to come up with one image, and use it in everything that represents the school.

I basically need to answer this question: What will West Side be? And we should focus on what we have that no one else does.

1.
2.
3.

Three things. Whatever those three things are I need to represent them in everything I do: website, brochures, business cards, logo, signage, atmosphere, building façade, how we answer the phone, how we teach classes—everything.

What will we be?

1. We will be technical
2. We will be friendly
3. We will sacrifice for our students’ success

Why West Side? (why should someone sign-up with us?)

1. We have certified Gracie instructors (Pedro Sauer Association)
2. We only have friendly, certified instructors that volunteer their time because they’re passionate about what they do and they want to help.
3. Our instructors sacrifice for your success

Now here’s the thing, West Side Academy has two images to come up with: the one above is our jiu-jitsu image. It will attract a certain kind of person, we also have to come up with an MMA image that is somewhat different—it will be for a different market.

What will West Side be for MMA students?

1. We will be encompassing (stand-up, transitions, ground)
2. We will be equipped
3. We will motivate students to help them achieve their goals

Why West Side?

1. We have a developed and proven MMA curriculum
2. We have instructors that are seasoned MMA fighters
3. We have the equipment needed for MMA including a cage
4. We are dedicated to helping students get ready for competitions/fights and or accomplishing their learning and conditioning goals

It’s going to be hard to get a hold of marketing, but I think it will give me a starting point to improve the school as a whole—wish me luck.
