The Brotherhood
Without sounding too cultish or biker gangy, I like the idea of jiu-jitsu as a brotherhood, or sisterhood, or familyhood, or however you want to phrase it. The idea of like minded people coming together to share in something they like to do. And “sharing” is the best term I can use to describe what I’m talking about.
When you go to jiu-jitsu and train with your brothers (I’m just going to use the word “brothers” implying sisters as well) you not only share your time, and your knowledge with each other, but you’re also giving a part of yourself to the group, to the school, to the art of jiu-jitsu. To me it’s this sharing that makes the group better; that makes the group a family—a brotherhood.

that is the best thing about our gym. I have been to bigger gyms where you do not feel the brotherhood. That being said, I do feel a kinship with all who train
This is a great post. That feeling of Brotherhood or unity is one of the greatest aspects of the martial arts. When we sweat and bleed with our fellow dojo rats, we share something that makes us special to each other and scary to outsiders. We bond through the discipline of self preservation and every moment we share or give of ourselves helps another to improve or maybe even save their life. There is another word for this action or selfless thought to help another without the expectation of reward…LOVE.
