There was a time in Japan when the samurai were out of favor and the martial arts as well as the sword were looked down upon. Thousands of years of martial knowledge as well as sword making were on the verge of being wiped out. The arts and the swords survived thanks to a small group of dedicated samurai who continued to practice and improve techniques despite the new laws against it.
I like to torture myself with “What ifs,” so, I was thinking the other day, What if for some unknown reason jiu-jitsu became illegal and was forced underground? What would I do?
Through my many years of comic book reading and daydreaming I already know what I’d do. I would start a secret society called the Lotus where a handful of dedicated students would train in the secret art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and keep the art of Helio alive. The group would meet in some secluded section of the city behind ancient doors, and train in the art that will never die.
Long live the Lotus.
