Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

Picture1I’m a fan of the cauliflower ear. I don’t think they should be drained, but seeing as I have never had one; it’s quite possible that I would change my mind if I did. That being said, I think the cauliflower ear is a symbol; it’s a sign to other people that the wearer has endured hardships on the mat, that the wearer is tough , and doesn’t quit (or it could mean the wearer is stubborn, or stupid, or he is always getting his head squeezed).

No matter what the reason, the cauliflower ear to me is a badge of honor. Yes, it’s grotesque, a body part mangled and distorted, dead cartilage, hardened and fibrous, but still beautiful in what it represents–a tough, hardworking grappler, who will willingly sacrifice an ear or two for the glory of victory.
