Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

There are people in your class that no one wants to roll with: the 300 hundred-pounder, the guy who is super strong that squeezes your head and muscles through everything, the guy that refuses to tap, the guy with super-human flexibility, and the guy who smells really bad. They’re the anomalies of the class, the freaks (when I say freak, I mean “not normal,” not your typical guy, I don’t mean it in a derogatory way. Weighing 330 lbs. myself I definitely qualify as a class freak and I’m proud of it.)

I’ve seen guys actually try and hide from these guys when it was time to train, or they make up an excuse not to train with them like “Dude, I hurt my ankle last week,” and you saw this same guy jumping rope before class, or even worse, when they flat out tell them “no.” The guys in your class that qualify as freaks are the guys that you should train with. They are the guys you should seek out, because they are technique testers.

When you go against a 300 lb guy, your technique needs to be right on. You can’t be lazy and you might need to modify your technique or even go to plan B. The same goes when you go against the guy that uses too much strength. That Americana you just put on is laughable when the guy just muscles out of it. You need to work on perfecting that technique so no one can muscle out of it—no one. Even the smelly guy should be rolled with (just delouse yourself after). Sometimes a guy smells so bad it messes with your mind. You’re thinking about how bad the guy smells when you should be concentrating on your jiu-jitsu; it becomes a mental game.

Every gym has technique testers, do not shun these guys, train with them and improve your game.
