Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

I started teaching jiu-jitsu to high school students in 2002. I had an after school program, and that program eventuall evolved into West Side Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Now I’m at a point where I’d like to help my community again by offering a free after school program to the high school kids in my city—to go back to where I started–to my roots.

I’ve asked a couple of my blue belts to teach the program which will be at least 3 days a week and it will be offered to kids that: attend school regularly, work hard at getting good grades, and aren’t violent (haven’t been in trouble for excessive fighting).

I think jiu-jitsu teaches all sorts of lessons and I’d like West Side Jiu-Jitsu and Tap or Die to be the ambassadors of change, to take good kids and give them somewhere to go, to give them great instructors and role models, and to teach them some valuable lessons about who they are and what they can do.

I think of myself and the people involved in this program as jiu-jitsu activists, volunteering our time, knowledge and space to help kids and spread the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

If you’re interested in sponsoring this group (donations for gis) give me a call (801) 920-6500 or email me johnsonm@ogdensd.org
