Education for the Sake of Educating

Learning should be personal. Learn the things that you want to learn. As a kid I was a horrible student; as an adult I’m no better. I’ve never been interested in learning things that other people wanted me to learn. I’ve never been a good hoop-jumper. I’ve always wanted to learn about the things I was interested in.
Now I’m learning about jiu-jitsu, and how to run a business, and how to market that business, and my teachers are just as good as any university professor I’ve ever had. I’ve been meeting with one of my younger student’s mother who is teaching me how to market my school. Her teachings have been invaluable and eye-opening and I appreciate the time she’s spending trying to help me.
Sometimes we need to learn things to grow as people and not just memorize information only to regurgitate it later on some test. I’ve been working on marketing because I love my school and I want it to be around for a long time; I want it to be there for the people who train there, I want it to be there for all those in my community who love jiu-jitsu. In order to do that, I have to grow as a business owner and in order to grow, I have to learn those things that I don’t know, and luckily for me I have people willing to teach me. To me it’s personal, it’s for me, and it’s important. You should learn something that you’ve been wanting to learn. Learn it for yourself; learn it because it will make you a better person. Learn it because you want to.
