MMA in Ogden
Ogden city has a long and storied boxing tradition, I think Jack Dempsey fought at the Berthana (a historical building in downtown Ogden) before he became the champ. Boxing now seems to be on wobbly legs; in my opinion it’s being given a standing eight.
Boxing however, is not out; it’s a very important part of MMA and there is a dedicated fan base that will never let the art die. I feel the same about jiu-jitsu. I don’t care how unpopular jiu-jitsu may become; it’s something I will never give up.
I like the idea of MMA incorporating what works into an overall style. Jiu-jitsu works—it’s in. Boxing?—yes, definitely. Tae kwon do—well, maybe the axe kick just for show, get rid of everything else.
MMA is an example of Charles Darwin’s Natural Selection, only the styles best adapted to the cage survive—period. There is no discussion, no pointing to thousands of years of practice and theory. If it works, it stays, if it doesn’t, it’s out.
Of course boxing works, all you have to do is look at Diego Sanchez’s face after BJ Penn demolished it with superior boxing. As far as MMA in Ogden, I think it’s here to stay, and it will have a long and storied tradition of its own.
