Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

On a friend’s Facebook page I mentioned how Matt Hughes beat Royce Gracie with jiu-jitsu. Of course this isn’t true, but Matt’s claim that he beat Royce with American wrestling isn’t true either. Did Hughes kick Royce’s butt? Undeniably. Did he use more than wrestling to beat him? of course he did.

The days of claiming one style are over, whether it’s wrestling, jiu-jitsu, or boxing. The elite use what works, but it’s funny to watch the die-hards scramble to defend their own world views. I’ll end with saying jiu-jitsu rules—bow down to the Gracies!

I had a discussian with Rigan about the Royce VS Hughes fight. Rigan, Roger, Jean-Jacques, Rickson, Renzo and a bunch of other SUPER high level Jiu-Jitsu guys offered to help Royce train for the Hughes fight . . . he turned each and everyone of them down. Royce stayed with the same couple of guys he has worked with for YEARS. In my opinion, there is a direct correlation between the level of your training and how much you respect your opponent and on that night Matt proved he respected Royce more than Royce respected him.

    Sorry about the spelling problems.

Well, of course! The straight arm lock from side control Hughes used to hyperextend Royce’s arm mid way through the fight wasn’t American wrestling.

I was hoping someone would catch that. A lot of people would argue that taking the back with hooks is jiu-jitsu, but I’ve seen plenty of wrestlers use leg rides and pancake guys from the back that that point isn’t as compelling, but the attempted straight arm lock, at least to me, is proof positive that Matt not only knows but obviously uses jiu-jitsu.
