Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

The West Side Classic: pure awesomeness. This year was very enjoyable, much like previous years, (we did have some over-competitive parents, and it went a little longer than expected, but hey, that’s the nature of the beast).

One of the coolest things that happened this year, in my opinion anyway, involved two kids. No adults were involved (if they were, I don’t think it would have turned out the way it did).

We had to combine brackets in one division, and in doing so we had a kid who was quite a bit bigger than the other competitors in his division. The kid’s name was Lane Hunt (nice kid, great jiu-jitsu). Well, Lane ended up beating everyone in his division, but after he was awarded the first place medal, he took it off and handed it to the second place medalist and said, “Here, you deserve it.”

Lane gets it; he understands the spirit of the competition. Lane understands more at his age, than some adults understand at theirs. Good job Lane. West Side is proud of you. It amazes me the lessons we learn from young people; it’s pure awesomeness.

As adults we tend to overlook the pure indominable spirit of children…
