Open-Mindedness
Last week my wonderful wife showed me a Facebook page entitled “Don’t Make Mr. Johnson Cover his Tattoos!” She joined it. The group was started by a former student of mine, Rayven—awesome kid.
Last week when I joined (of course I joined, it’s a great cause) there were 450 members and as of today there are 2,539 and a ton of posts—nice posts–comments that made me well up a little.
Anyway, after reading these posts, I’ve decided I was wrong. Not about the tattoo thing or voicing my opinion or any of that. I was wrong when I said to a reporter that the purpose of education was to open minds. That was a mistake, because I realized after reading all those comments, that young people, especially high school students, are already open-minded. They are already accepting, open, and understanding of different beliefs and ideas.
So the job of education is not to open the minds of young people; they are already open, the job of education is to keep those open minds from closing.
Thanks for all the kindness—One Love.
Mr. Johnson
