The Dalai Lama Scratched his Bum

He did. I saw him do it, and that’s why I like him. A few years ago I had the chance to see his Holiness speak at the University of Utah. He spoke in the basketball stadium—it was packed, and I was near nose-bleed section—I was at the tippy of the tippy, tippy top–thank God for the Jumbotron.
The Dalai Lama’s speech, at times, was a little boring and the atmosphere wasn’t what I expected–a holy man in a gym wasn’t really doing it for me, but what I remember most was the Dalai Lama sitting in lotus position, shifting his weight to one cheek, and scratching his bum. In front of everyone, he scratched, giggled, and continued his speech. It was undoubtedly one of the coolest things I’ve every seen a holy man do.
Why am I writing about this? Why am I writing about the Dalai Lama-the bum scratcher? It’s because we need to be reminded that we’re all human, even the holiest of holy have an itchy bum. I think we should do our best, whether it’s in jiu-jitsu or parenting or in school or in life in general, but we shouldn’t be afraid to be human. We shouldn’t be self-conscious about being human. So if your bum itches, scratch it, and you’ll be just like the Dalai Lama–human.
